Breast Cancer Awareness

During the midst of Covid this year, Staff of Southern Cross Support Services did what they could to support people from all walks of life, here is one story of how an inspirational HR Officer went an extra mile to help...

Steph works in our HR Team at Head Office in Bundaberg, and for anyone that knows her, she has the loveliest red healthy hair.

Steph said she had "Seen a lot of negative posts online, about the same time I started getting all these ads popping up about Breast Cancer Awareness month in June. I figured I really wanted to get involved and do a small part to maybe help someone going through a tough time, whether they had lost their hair through cancer treatment or suffered from an autoimmune disease such as Alopecia. I did a lot of searching online about Shave for a Cure and hair donations. A lot of sources led me to "Sustainable Salons" who take hair donations and pass them on to various wigmakers. I came to the conclusion that I would cut and donate my hair. I thought hard about whether to fully shave my head, but I just could not commit to it with such cold weather during winter. Thankfully Sustainable Salons accept ponytails as short as 20cm. I ended up cutting off 25cm to donate and wanted to brighten up the hair I have left as you can see. Although I loved my red hair, I am fortunate that It will grow back, and it is nice to have a change."

Great work Steph!
